Even without Drama, Ray Rice May Be Benched in 2014 for Bernard Pierce
Smoke is in the city of Baltimore surrounding the whole issue of Ray Rice. His assault incident and now marriage to Janay Palmer has everyone screaming about what to do with the running back situation. We know he will be subject to the league’s conduct policy even after beating the charges. I believe even if he does beat the charges, Rice will not be the starter for the Baltimore Ravens in 2014.
There have been fans who reached out to Rice in support and still believe he is a great guy who may have made a mistake. People will get pass this, so will the league and so will the Rice family. So let’s get back to talking about what matters.
His game play may not have him starting in the 2014 season. Rice had career-low numbers in 2013 due to injury and new offensive schemes that were horrendous by definition. Bernard Pierce will prove to be a good candidate for the starting job being the only other back on the roster with game-time experience and success in that time.
I have been in Pierce’s corner for some time now. I believe with the combination of Rice’s game play and his recent incident may have opened a door for the Ravens to not only give Pierce the starting job, but also bring in a talent like Bishop Sankey or Ka’Deem Carey from the draft in to compete with Rice as the primary backup. In the past, many analysts were comparing Pierce’s running style to that of Arian Foster. With most of the Houston Texans’ former coaching staff here in Baltimore now, there is no better time to test that theory. Should the move prove successful, Rice’s days may be numbered. Heck, they may be numbered already.
These organizations are so secretive about their moves nowadays that we don’t know what is going to happen.According to BaltimoreRavens.com, Steve Bisciotti said in an interview “He’ll be back with the team. He’ll definitely be back.” However, if we remember in the past, Chris McAlister thought he was safe when he was in the room with Ozzie Newsome during the offseason and shortly after he was cut by John Harbaugh. The difference between the two players is that Harbaugh actually likes Ray Rice. Rice had better hope that his relationship with Harbaugh is strong enough to keep him around.Look for training camp to be more competitive than it has been in years at the RB position.
