2014 NFL Draft: 5 Day 3 Prospects the Dallas Cowboys Must Target

The Dallas Cowboys’ draft problems are well publicized, but in fairness, they have been better the past few seasons—at least on day one. The biggest draft problems for Dallas have been on day two and even more so on day three. Day three of the draft consists of rounds four through seven. This is where Dallas must get better in order to escape the mediocrity that they are currently in. Here are five players Dallas should target on day three.

Running back is not a pressing need for Dallas, but in the late rounds, it is about taking fliers on players with a lot of upside. I believe Thomas can be a playmaker due to his explosive speed.

Dallas released WR Miles Austin. While they have capable players waiting in the wings, I still believe they should take a receiver somewhere in the draft. Davis is expected to go in the fourth round, and I think he would be a great pick for Dallas.

In the last rounds of the draft, this is what Dallas’ strategy should be—when in doubt, take a defensive lineman. Dallas needs to stockpile linemen and hope a few of them can contribute on a regular basis. Lynch is a pass-rushing defensive end who can put pressure on the opposing QB.

Another option in the late rounds along the DL could be Calvin Barnett. Barnett is a DT out of Oklahoma State and plays well against the run.

I know Kyle Orton is coming back and I know they signed Brandon Weeden. However, having three QBs in their 30s is not the ideal situation. I do not care if Dallas has to trade or release someone; they should draft a young QB in this draft. My choice would be Aaron Murray out of Georgia even though he is coming off an ACL injury. Maybe the Cowboys could put him on injured reserve all season and keep the three current QBs as well.
