The New England Patriots will use the draft to boost a team that has been competitive for a long time. With the mind of Bill Belichick, there should be no reason why the team shouldn't be aggressive. The Patriots are one team with a lot of surrounding draft rumors, mainly involving the future of the team as far as drafting young talent for the veterans.
Here are five Pats rumors that you need to know as draft day nears.
Belichick is a mastermind when it comes to finding huge talent later in the draft. It should come as no surprise if the Patriots would be okay with moving down in the draft if the deal is right. The team will have eight draft picks, so it would seem that the team may not be in a rush to pick a player who fits their needs.
With the departures of some key players from the defensive side of the football, there is no doubt that the Patriots should look at the draft to obtain young talent on defense. Losing key players from the defensive end, linebacker and secondary in free agency means that the team will be focused on defense more than ever.
With the loss of LeGarrette Blount and the failure to obtain solid running backs in free agency, this position is going to be key in the draft. The team needs to be prepared due to Stevan Ridley and Shane Vereen having issues that have limited their playing time.
Rob Gronkowski has had quite an injury spell over the last few seasons. He has been known as Tom Brady's security blanket in the passing game. While the team has won games without him, they have not gotten past the AFC Championship Game in two years. The Patriots should avoid having that happen for the third year in a row and draft a tight end who can help the franchise in case Gronk gets hurt again.
There is no doubt that like Peyton Manning for the Denver Broncos, Brady will not be in the league much longer. It appeared that the team is preparing for life after Brady when it was announced that they were thinking about talking to Johnny Manziel and a few other quarterbacks. If the team decides to draft a signal caller, this shows that they want to prepare for a team no longer led by Brady.
