While the Chargers had a competitive season in 2013, they squeaked into and out of the playoffs quietly. Not much noise has been made in the offseason, and there has been little conversation of what San Diego will do with the 25th pick in the first round. Like most teams with a late pick, the Chargers will have to see how things play out before making a first selection.

Here are five dark horse candidates for the San Diego Chargers.

5. Derek Carr, QB, Fresno State

The Chargers need to invest in a franchise quarterback within the next few years, and Derek Carr could be that quarterback. If Johnny Manziel, Teddy Bridgewater and Blake Bortles are all picked before the 25th pick, then Carr could find himself in a Chargers uniform. With 50 touchdowns and eight interceptions in 2013, it would be hard to pass up on this young signal caller.

4. Eric Ebron, TE, North Carolina

The Chargers would be very strong running a two-tight end set with Eric Ebron and a rotation of Ladarius Green and Antonio Gates. Ebron has been called the next Jimmy Graham, and this 6-foot-4 tight end may just be too talented to pass on.

3. Jason Verrett, CB, TCU

Many have questioned how 5-foot-9, 189-pound Jason Verrett can fare in the NFL. His size is a concern, but other cornerbacks may be off the board by the time the Chargers have their first pick. He may be a risk, but Verrett totaled nine interceptions in three seasons.

2. Kyle Fuller, CB, Virginia Tech

Kyle Fuller is considered a cornerback who will be drafted outside of the first round, but he could end up as the Chargers' first pick. If there is a rush on cornerbacks, the Chargers may need to make a move on Fuller. With 173 tackles, six interceptions and four forced fumbles in his career, Fuller could work out to become a star player.

1. Sammy Watkins, WR, Clemson

This would be another value pick for the Chargers. The offense moved the ball well in 2013 and ranked fourth in passing yards, but Rivers could still use more weapons. Sammy Watkins and Keenan Allen would make a dangerous duo.
