San Francisco 49ers running back LaMichael James is reportedly on the trade block, and he has not showed up for the team’s offseason workouts this week.

On the surface the 49ers have enough depth at running back to consider parting with James. That said, here are five reasons they should keep him around.

Head coach Jim Harbaugh would surely not be ok with the 49ers parting with a player he could have use for. Assuming he has any influence on personnel moves at this point.

Multiple reports have suggested the 49ers are shopping James, which possibly has teams waiting for them to release him rather than give up anything in a trade.

3. Running Back Depth Does Not Necessarily Equal Strength

Frank Gore is still the No. 1 running back in San Francisco, but behind him Kendall Hunter does not profile as an every-down back and Marcus Lattimore is far from a known commodity as he works his way back from a torn ACL. James would be worth keeping around for a potential worst-case scenario.

James has not done enough through two NFL seasons to be worth more than a late-round draft pick. If he performs well in 2014, with presumably a bigger role, his trade value would be better a year from now.

Gore will turn 31 in May, is entering the final year of his contract and has over 2,100 career carries. Keeping James in the fold would give the 49ers an extra fallback option if Gore starts to break down physically.
