2014 NFL Draft: Pittsburgh Steelers’ 1st Round Scenario 5.0

The 2014 NFL Draft is two weeks away, and NFL franchises are narrowing down their draft boards in anticipation of their first-round draft selection. For the Pittsburgh Steelers who select 15th in the first round, their options will solely rely on the selections of the teams selecting before them.

There is an uneasy tension throughout social media amongst Steelers fans as to which players will be available when their favorite team gets to make their selection. In this scenario, some of the big names that the Steelers have targeted are off the board.

Off the board when the 15th selection rolls around are: cornerback Darqueze Dennard, cornerback Justin Gilbert, tight end Eric Ebron and wide receiver Mike Evans. However, even with those players off the board there are still options for the Steelers.

One would be to trade the 15th selection to garner more draft picks and move back into the draft. However, in this scenario that doesn’t occur. Therefore, the Steelers will need to make a selection without some of the highlighted players that they desperately hoped would fall to them.

Instead of going after defense, the Steelers turn their attention to adding a wide receiver who can not only compete for a starting position, but be effective from day one. They would find that player in wide receiver Odell Beckham Jr. from LSU.

Beckham might not have the size that Ben Roethlisberger has vocally requested since Plaxico Burress left, but he fits the mold of receiver the Steelers have targeted under head coach Mike Tomlin. Beckham is 5-foot-11, 198-pounds and a quick, shifty receiver who sported a 4.43 40-yard dash time at the NFL combine. He has the route running skills that will equate to success in the NFL.

Although Beckham would be competing for the No. 3 or 4 wide receiver position with the Steelers, he would be a valuable addition to a team that desperately needs quality depth at the wide receiver position.
