In 2014, the San Diego Chargers are hoping to make the leap into the elite group of teams within the NFL. The team’s last season was considered a success, in which they won nine games regular-season games as well as their opening-round playoff game. If the Chargers are going to have a more successful season than last, they must win big games during the regular season and they have plenty. Here's a look at the Chargers' five biggest games of 2014.
By the time Week 14 rolls around, several teams will be fighting for a leg ahead in the AFC playoff race. The Chargers will likely be one of them, and a win here could give them a huge advantage in the playoff race as well as show the NFL they are ready for a deep playoff run. Not to mention, QB Philip Rivers will be motivated to prove he is one of the NFL's best quarterbacks by outplaying Super Bowl winner Tom Brady on Sunday Night Football.
The Chargers will face the Seattle Seahawks in Week 2, and this game will be a true test for Philip Rivers and the Chargers' offense. Luckily this is a home game for the Chargers which greatly improves their chances of winning. The Chargers would get a ton of momentum if they defeat the Super Bowl champions in Week 2, and it would set the Bolts up for a memorable season.
This is a huge game for the Chargers for one reason: playoff implications. The Chargers' playoffs chances could be decided in their final two games, and unfortunately they are playing on the road against one of the NFL's toughest teams in Week 16. The San Francisco 49ers' defense will be at full force by this time of the season, and luckily the whole nation gets to watch this intense match-up on Saturday Night Football.
Both of the Chargers' games against division-rival Denver Broncos will be absolutely critical for having a successful year. If the Chargers want a shot at winning the AFC West, they must win at least one game against Peyton Manning and the Broncos. The Chargers winning their Week 8 game at Denver would be a great way to establish dominance over the AFC West, and another win Week 15 at home against the Broncos would be a great way to maintain it.
The Chargers' final game of the regular season against the Kansas City Chiefs will ultimately be the team's biggest game. Just like last season, the Chargers and Chiefs will both be in playoff contention towards the end of the regular season, and it is more than likely this game will decide who wins an AFC Wild Card spot. It's a long way off, but the Chargers already have this one circled.
