For the Rant Sports 2014 NFL Mock Draft, the Houston Texans select DE Jadeveon Clowney. While many feel that the Texans should go with a franchise quarterback like Blake Bortles, Teddy Bridgewater or Johnny Manziel, I believe that the Texans will ultimately go with the best talent available.
Clowney has been described as a freakishly athletic specimen. While some question Clowney’s work ethic, many others say that Clowney is a special talent that only comes along once every few years. Some believe that Clowney is a once in a lifetime talent!
This is a particularly difficult decision for the Texans because Matt Schaub was traded to the Oakland Raiders. With question marks at the key quarterback position, an elite QB may be a better fit for the Texans. On the other hand, history shows that it takes most quarterbacks at least a few years to fully develop and strongly contribute to a team.
For the past several years, Clowney was projected as the top overall pick in the NFL Draft. A “once-in-a-lifetime athlete,” scouts had never before seen a physical specimen like Clowney — even as a high school athlete! After two great seasons at South Carolina, Clowney had a disappointing three-sack season in 2013, raising red flags. People were worried about an injury — or bad attitude — and changed Clowney’s outlook to a top five pick.
In the end, Clowney’s strong showing at the NFL Pro Day helped tip the scales in favor of Clowney’s selection as the top overall pick. Not only was Clowney physically impressive, the super-talent “with an attitude” came across as funny, genuine and actually likable!
The Texans will not be disappointed in Clowney’s physicality and results as an NFL pass rusher.
