You can make fun of him for not having had a real NFL job in three years, but you can’t knock him for trying. Vince Young is back in football, kind of.
The Cleveland Browns have become the latest team to give the former star a shot, and they’re doing it in the form of a tryout. Young will be in attendance at Browns camp on Monday along with veteran Tyler Thigpen.
The question now becomes — how long will he stay on the team?
He’s been close to keeping a job over the last couple of seasons, but he always ends up getting cut. Now with the Browns he seems to have his best shot in a long time of being one of the final 53.
Brian Hoyer currently pencils in as the Browns signal-caller for 2014, but he’s coming off ACL surgery and is far from proven. Many people believe the Browns will also draft a QB at some point next weekend, so Young could very well be competing for the third string spot. At this point he’s going to take what he can get. If he did end up as their No. 3 guy, it certainly could be worse.
Young has proven that he can play in the NFL. He’s a two-time Pro Bowler with a 31-19 career record. But there’s obviously a reason why he hasn’t played since 2011.
We’ll have to see where the saga of Vince Young goes in the coming days and weeks. This chapter could end tomorrow or four months from now. Either way, give the QB credit for continuing to pursue his passion (paycheck?).
