The NFL Draft is coming up, and the San Diego Chargers will have some interesting decisions to make if they want to return to the playoffs. They have several glaring needs that need to be addressed through the draft in hopes of upgrading their roster. Here are five worst-case scenarios for their first-round selection.

5. They Draft A Quarterback

The Chargers have a great quarterback in Philip Rivers, and should not risk a first-round selection just because a quarterback falls in the first round. None of the quarterbacks have done much to separate themselves at the top of the draft, and the Chargers would be foolish to waste their pick on a quarterback for the future.

4. They Draft Another Outside Linebacker

There is a significant drop-off in talent after the top two outside linebackers in the draft, and while the Chargers have a need at the position, they are better off waiting. There are some very talented outside linebackers who should be available on the second and third day of the draft, and the pick could be better used on another position.

3. No Top Cornerbacks Left

The Chargers need to draft several cornerbacks, and it would be significant if they can find a gem in the first round. There are several players worthy of a first-round selection, but there is a chance that they are all taken by the time the Chargers are on the clock. If they are unable to secure a top cornerback, then their pass defense could struggle mightily again.

2. They Trade Up In The First Round

The Chargers need to keep as many picks as possible to retool their roster. They traded up for Ryan Mathews several years ago, which proved to be a risky move that lost them needed draft picks. There should be plenty of quality players left when they select, so they need to be patient and hold on to their future picks.

It has happened to teams before, so the Chargers need to be mindful of the time and rules ahead of the draft. Some teams tend to wait until the last second to make a selection, which can be a risky maneuver.
