If you follow along with NFL draft rumors, you’ve probably seen that Jeff Fisher is really high on Johnny Manziel by this point.
With the No. 2 and No. 13 picks in their back pocket, the St. Louis Rams can pretty much do what they want on draft day. The Houston Texans don’t really seem to want the No. 1 pick and even if they do stand pat, the safe bet is that they’ll select Jadeveon Clowney. Given the Rams strong defensive line, missing out on Clowney wouldn’t figure to bum them out too much.
On top of the Manziel rumors there are also Sam Bradford to the Minnesota Vikings rumors brewing as well. The Rams have denied talking to the Vikings about such a deal, but if they truly are sold on John Football, the Bradford rumors make more sense.
I’m just not buying any of it.
It would be one thing if the Rams needed a quarterback. But we’re talking about a franchise that spent a No. 1 pick on a QB just four years back. They’ve already rolled the dice on a signal-caller early on in the draft, and that guy is still under contract and ready to play this season.
Is Bradford running out of time to prove himself? Maybe. But it’s hard to say that he’s played bad enough to cost himself the Rams starting job.
Johnny Football is great. If St. Louis does select him and deals Bradford it won’t be that crazy. It’s just not the best move the team could make. They’d be much better off by selecting Sammy Watkins at No.2 and giving Bradford someone to really work with.
It’s tough to identify them this time of year, but I’m calling smokescreen in the case of Johnny Manziel to the St. Louis Rams.
