Jimmy Graham is the best tight end in football. But given the amount of time he spends out wide, Graham doesn’t just want to be paid like the best TE in the game, he wants to be paid like one of the best WRs in the game too.
News has emerged that Graham has indeed gone ahead with his plans to file a grievance against the New Orleans Saints for placing the TE franchise tag on him. He’s got about 5 million reasons why. That’s the amount of additional pay he’d receive if the Saints were forced to tag him as a WR…although his Twitter account suggests he’s fine with being a TE:
If the two sides are unable to come to an agreement, then a third party arbitrator would hear the case. Based on the way things have gone thus far, it’s likely this case will go all the way to a hearing.
Overall, this is a no-win situation for the Saints. Either they have to pay Graham a lot more money, or he’s going to get angrier over not getting what he deems as fair. The impact that might have on the long-term contract talks between the two sides might could be very bad.
If you’re a Saints fan, you’re just hoping the team pays Graham sooner rather than later. He’s worth the money and deserves to be paid like the best TE in all of football. The longer this situation draws out, the worse it’s going to get. The franchise isn’t in a win-win situation here, but it can certainly avoid a lose-lose situation by opening up its checkbook.
