The Green Bay Packers absolutely made the right call selecting safety Ha Ha Clinton-Dix out of Alabama with the 21st overall pick in the 2014 NFL Draft. I have been preaching for months that he is the perfect fit for the Packers, and now we will have the opportunity to see firsthand why that is. Take a look at the five reasons why Green Bay was smart to select Clinton-Dix in the first round.

The Packers need immediate help at the safety position as Morgan Burnett and M.D. Jennings graded out as the worst in the league in 2013. Clinton-Dix is ready to have an impact right out of the gate for Green Bay, which is exactly what the team needs if they want to reach the Super Bowl in the upcoming season. Expect Clinton-Dix to have the same effect Eddie Lacy had for the Packers in his rookie season.

Green Bay needed a safety that isn’t afraid to lay the big hit. He definitely has some room to improve on his strength in the weight room. However, he has the natural instincts that allow him to deliver a crushing blow whenever necessary. To have someone like that in the secondary is a dream come true for the Packers. Green Bay’s last line of defense will finally strike fear into opponents once again.

One of the biggest issues Packers’ safeties have faced in years past is taking down ballcarriers in the open field. Thankfully, Clinton-Dix’s natural instincts allow him to be an aggressive attacker. He is outstanding at reading the run and figuring out the best approach to bring down the ballcarrier. Even though he’s best suited as a deep safety, knowing he can be a physical tackler at the line of scrimmage is important.

Clinton-Dix has the speed and athleticism that will allow him to cover the field in the blink of an eye. He will take away the deep route and frustrate opponents because of it. His ability to cover sideline-to-sideline and defend the pass is something Green Bay will cherish for a very long time. He has the type of range that gets safeties elected to multiple Pro Bowls in a career.

Clinton-Dix’s most important attribute has to be his ability to make plays on the ball. If the Packers needed one thing out of a defensive back, it’s to create turnovers. Clinton-Dix has great hands and can do wonders once he gets ahold of the football. More importantly, he understands how to make game-changing plays and executes that ability to precision. He knows that winning championships means recording interceptions.
