The day of the 2014 NFL Draft is finally here and although rumors of who is going where are more abundant than Eli Manning turnovers, we’ve got one that is a pretty safe bet: The Jacksonville Jaguars are targeting three players with the No. 3 overall pick and one of them is a quarterback.

An ESPN report on Thursday morning stated the Jaguars’ first-round draft board consists of only three players and they’re guaranteed to get one of them considering they hold that third pick. While a majority of the last-minute murmurs suggest Clemson receiver Sammy Watkins will be the pick, Buffalo linebacker Khalil Mack is also one of the three, according to the report.

The third player on the board is definitely a quarterback, although the specific signal-caller hasn’t been disclosed. However, a complementary report suggests that it’s Johnny Manziel, citing words directly from Jaguars owner Shahid Khan.

As NFL realist and humorist Evan Silva recently tweeted, the Jaguars lack a franchise quarterback and a franchise pass-rusher and if they take Watkins at No. 3, they still won’t have either of those necessary pieces. They could strike gold in the later rounds, but that’s unlikely given their recent draft history.

However, they could take Watkins and then land a solid passer like Zach Mettenberger or AJ McCarron in the middle rounds and have him start in Week 1. Despite all the hype surrounding guys like Teddy Bridgewater and Manziel, Mettenberger and McCarron are the most NFL-ready signal-callers in this year’s class. Remember: Russell Wilson was a third-round pick in 20120 and he started in Week 1 of his rookie season.

When you think about it, the Jaguars would actually be better off taking Watkins or Mack at No. 3 and then waiting on a quarterback. Of course, the debate about which of those two players to take that high in the draft is another argument, but it’s one Jaguars fans should hope the team has already had.
