With the 16th pick in the 2104 NFL Draft, the Dallas Cowboys select Zack Martin, T/G, Notre Dame.

Rejoice Cowboys fans!

I cannot control my excitement right now, this is a glorious day, especially when you consider that under Jerry Jones, the Cowboys generally don’t select first round offensive linemen. Now, they have three first round guys that will, no doubt, carry the franchise going forward.

So who is Zack Martin?

On my board, I had Martin graded as the best guard prospect available. He is a solid offensive lineman, who is also athletic enough to mirror the defender off the snap. He is quick off the ball and does a very good job engaging and sustaining his blocks.

I specifically like that he is a beast in the run game, showing the strength necessary to move the defender and finish strong. With this pick the Cowboys also get a very durable offensive lineman, who has never missed a game.

As with most prospects, Martin has his flaws. For starters, he’s not the strongest guy and will require some work in pass protection. Another knock on Martin is his at best, average arm length.

Overall, I think that the Cowboys found themselves a solid prospect that should be able to come in and immediately unseat either Ron Leary or Mackenzie Bernadeau in training camp. I imagine that the Cowboys will work him inside in 2014 with the intention to replace Doug Free at right tackle after the 2014 Season.
