Bradley Roby is a very speedy kind of defensive athlete. Able to keep up and cover the best receivers thrown his way, he’s an impact kind of player that will be able to immediately contribute once he hits the field. The Denver Broncos needed to fill some of its defensive secondary holes due to some departing players via free agency. With cornerbacks Champ Bailey and Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie gone, the Broncos headed into the 2014 NFL Draft with a mission to draft a solid cornerback to work alongside free agent acquisition Aqib Talib.
When it comes to looking at last season as a whole, the Broncos ended its efforts with a major disappointment when it mattered most. After having an incredible season under quarterback Peyton Manning, the organization and many across the globe were absolutely shocked after the Broncos 43-8 loss to the Seattle Seahawks in Super Bowl XLVIII. With yet another opportunity left on the table to earn another championship, the Broncos have had a busy offseason in order to bolster its defensive effort for this upcoming season. They needed to draft a solid cornerback since the Seahawks once again proved, thanks to Richard Sherman, that defense is what truly wins games.
One has to wonder, how long does Manning have before father time catches up to him? How many seasons does he realistically have once the day comes he wants to retire after his Hall of Fame career? At the moment, no one knows but one thing is for sure, the Broncos success and failures are on his shoulders. Manning’s success also depends on how good the Broncos defense does against opposing teams. The secret to beating Manning is easy — keep him off the field. Now with two shut-down kind of cornerbacks in the fold mixing youth and veteran experience, the Broncos are now in a much better defensive position as they gear up for hopefully another terrific season.
Roby is a perfect fit for the Broncos since he’s a quick learner and will have a great mentor in Talib. Roby is a tackling machine and is a great blitzer, especially when going after quarterbacks. When it comes to the Broncos’ nickel schemes on defense especially, Roby will be a force to reckon with. These two will form quite the dynamic duo that will take immense pressure off of Manning’s shoulders since after all, adding a top cornerback via the draft was the missing piece of the puzzle for the Broncos.
Now with Roby in town, even the best quarterbacks from Tom Brady to Phillip Rivers will have to think twice when passing.
