Chicago Bears Reach for DT Ego Ferguson in 2nd Round of 2014 NFL Draft
Continuing what is now becoming a draft day tradition for the Chicago Bears, the team reached for Ego Ferguson, a defensive tackle from LSU. Bears GM Phil Emery has shown that he has no fear about reaching for players in places that others might not expect. After hitting the jackpot with first-round choice Kyle Long last season, Emery was at it again in Round 2 today when he selected Ferguson with the 51st overall selection in the 2014 NFL Draft.
At 6-foot-2 and 315 pounds, Ferguson definitely has the size to play the three-technique for the Bears, though, he still needs to develop his skill-set a bit more. I can’t fault the Bears for bringing in help along the defensive line, as they desperately need it, though I would have preferred to see them go for someone a bit more polished and ready to make an impact immediately.
Ferguson was at LSU for three seasons, but he only started a total of 12 games. After redshirting his freshman year, he would come off the bench over the next two seasons before becoming a starter in 2013. After 12 games, he suffered an ankle injury that ended his season. Over those 12 games, Ferguson only racked up one sack and 3.5 tackles for loss.
This pick resembles the Bears’ choice of Long just a year ago. Having only started a handful of games in college, Long was drafted based on his potential and would go on to make the Pro Bowl in his first NFL season. With a good amount of coaching, and learning from his fellow linemen, Ferguson does have an enormous upside. That being said, the Bears will hope he can develop quickly as they are very thin in the middle of the defensive line.
For now, I’ll give Phil Emery the benefit of the doubt based on his past draft success, as long as he keeps drafting for the needs of the team.
