The 2014 NFL Draft was a rousing success from a TV ratings perspective, and it offered us a number of interesting story lines. You can bet that Johnny Football will make an appearance on this list, but we will also cover a few of the headlines that not as many people are highlighting. Enjoy the 10 biggest winners from over the weekend.
Kind of a mixed bag for the Cleveland Browns after the Josh Gordon news, but that still does not change the fact that they absolutely murdered the draft. They not only picked up Johnny Football, but also grabbed a cornerback to solidify their secondary. Do not pencil them into the playoffs quite yet, but this team could have just set up their future quite nicely.
The Texans have set their defense up for the next decade with their first round draft pick, and it was kind of an easy decision for them at the end of the day. Do not come here shocked if they happen to league the lead in sacks next season. J.J. Watt has eaten bigger burritos than you!
Apparently, due to James' Nike connections, the Chosen One was able to rock out his Manziel jersey the day after the first round. Pretty cool, and it would not come as a surprise here if James makes an appearance at Browns' games from time to time.
Johnny Football might be heading to a cursed city, but he has big time talent. If he can figure out a way to stay healthy in the NFL, then I could see him having a few productive seasons for the Browns.
It is probably the only time of the year that Goodell feels so much physical affection. I'm sure he enjoys it. Not sure that he enjoys it quite as much as David Stern used to love getting booed at the NBA draft though.
The NFL has done quite a nice job of nabbing headlines from the NBA, and it would not shock me to see the draft expanded even more. They were joking on "Around the Horn" about how eventually it might become a process of getting one draft pick a day for the whole offseason. Let's hope not.
They were able to grab quite a few viewers over the weekend, and that means that we should expect even more for the games this year. Rant Sports was able to post one of its highest traffic weekends of the year, so you definitely do not hear me complaining.
The basketball ratings were pretty rough as a result of the draft this weekend, but expect those to pick up in the next few weeks. The football ratings on the other hand? They look like they are about to balloon even more.
There may not be that many young quarterbacks who are starting at the beginning of the year, but it was still a pretty heavy draft when it came to field generals. I would also expect a lot of those fellows to be starting by the end of the season.
The Sam news was pretty remarkable in a lot of ways, and folks will probably not be able to fully appreciate how huge this was until a few years from now. I'm really proud of the league for drafting Sam, and I think it will help the sport move forward into a better place.
