Dallas Cowboys: Which Rookies Will Have the Biggest Impact?
The Dallas Cowboys had an interesting draft to say the least. The world pretty much stopped when the Cowboys were on the clock at No. 16 and Johnny Manziel was still on the board. I’d have to say that a massive number of people probably just assumed that the Cowboys were about to lock up their future quarterback.
That is, until you heard that the Cowboys selected “Z…”, what? Yep, Zack Martin, the offensive lineman from the Notre Dame Fighting Irish. Many were shocked, but the draft “experts” from all over the place raved about the decision that Jerry Jones and the Cowboys’ draft room made when choosing to pass on Manziel.
Adding Martin gives the Cowboys one of the best offensive lines in the NFL, which was one of their biggest weaknesses just around two years ago. Does he qualify as one of the rookies prepared to have the biggest impact? You bet he does.
Martin: The addition of Martin is absolutely huge. He’s going to make the life of Tony Romo a whole lot easier, which means that we’ll see some great offensive production, in my opinion, not only from Romo, but from DeMarco Murray as well.
Martin has been called the potential steal of this draft, and I think that’s spot on. He’s got so much upside and is an immediate starter at this level regardless. I love the pick, and I love the impact he’ll have.
Devin Street: Don’t know the name yet? You will. Street was the all-time leading receiver for the Pittsburgh Panthers by the time he left, giving you an idea of what he’s capable of. While everyone raved about the wide outs going in the top two or three rounds, the Cowboys waited and got their man in the fifth, and if he can put on some weight he’s going to have a huge impact for this team.
I’m not expecting a dominating year, but he’s going to do more than enough to make things a whole lot easier on Dez Bryant, Jason Witten and Terrance Williams.
Demarcus Lawrence: There are going to be immediate comparisons to another well-known DeMarcus, but I’m not willing to push it that far just yet. Lawrence is a major-league playmaker, and I think that he’s going to step in and immediately make this defense better. The Cowboys hit a home run by trading up to get Lawrence, and I believe he may have the biggest impact out of this entire rookie class for the Boys.
