No one said playing in the NFL made you a smart guy. Don Jones, safety for the Miami Dolphins, was not a smart guy on Saturday. Shortly after Michael Sam was selected by the St. Louis Rams in the seventh round of the 2014 NFL Draft, Jones simply tweeted out “Horrible.”
That’s right, he tweeted about the dumbest thing he could have possibly tweeted.
This whole story is made even worse when you consider that Jones himself was a seventh round draft pick in 2013. Because unless you’re a real moron, that’s all Sam is — a football player who was drafted in the seventh round.
Jones has since been fined and come out with this apology:
“I want to apologize to Michael Sam for the inappropriate comments that I made last night on social media. I take full responsibility for them and I regret that these tweets took away from his draft moment. I remember last year when I was drafted in the seventh round and all of the emotions and happiness I felt when I received the call that gave me an opportunity to play for an NFL team and I wish him all the best in his NFL career. I sincerely apologize to Mr. Ross, my teammates, coaches, staff and fans for these tweets. I am committed to represent the values of the Miami Dolphins organization and appreciate the opportunity I have been given to do so going forward.”
In this case, sorry is most certainly not going to pay the bills.
Look, everyone is entitled to their opinion on gay athletes. But there’s a time a place to express your opinions if you’re in the camp (seemingly) that Jones is in. The time and place is not after Sam gets selected on Twitter. Even if he just felt the Sam pick was a bad football pick, he was ultimately best-served to keep his thoughts to himself.
