The owner of the Cleveland Browns is full of you-know-what. Jimmy Haslam has been the biggest Johnny Manziel fan of all over the past year and is now saying the polarizing quarterback is the backup. Yeah, right.
In an interview with the Cleveland Plain Dealer, Haslam said Brian Hoyer is the Browns’ starting quarterback and Manziel will have to come in and “go to work” as a “blue-collar” player because “this isn’t Hollywood.”
Really, Jimmy? Care to explain that to the 1,500 new season ticket holders your team enjoyed the 12 hours after you drafted Manziel No. 22 overall in the 2014 NFL Draft? Or how about the thousands of fans who have already bought Manziel jerseys, making his the best-selling in the league?
This is just Haslam blowing smoke because everyone in Cleveland — and the entire world — knows that Manziel will be the starter when the Browns travel east to take on the Pittsburgh Steelers in Week 1. Hoyer may be the starter on paper right now, but Manziel will win the job during training camp, whether he actually deserves it or not.
The Browns need excitement and although Hoyer provided it for two weeks in 2013 before tearing his ACL, all of Cleveland rejoiced like it was 1964 — the last time they won an NFL Championship, before the Super Bowl era.
Those fans are pumped to see Johnny Football take the field for their favorite team and will probably riot outside FirstEnergy Stadium if he’s not under center in Week 1.
You can bet Manziel will be the Browns’ starter this year and Hoyer will likely be on the trading block. Don’t believe Haslam for a minute.
