Quarterback Michael Vick has had an interesting career to say the least. He was once the king of a new era in professional football by being a speedy quarterback who could beat teams either through the air or on the ground. He broke plenty of records when he entered the NFL and due to some major mistakes off the field, was brought back down to reality. He paid for his mistakes in prison and was in essence given a second chance to redeem himself.
The Philadelphia Eagles took a big risk a few years ago by bringing him back to the spotlight given the circumstances. It definitely paid off for them, and he had a good run there until father time and injuries finally caught up to Vick. He was released and put in an interesting situation going into free agency. With the New York Jets, they needed to bring in a veteran who could help mentor, develop and give great advice to the future quarterback in Geno Smith. With that being said, the Jets took yet another risk by signing Vick to help fill that role.
So far with the Jets, Vick has been a great addition without having stepped foot on the field with the team yet. With many analysts believing there would be yet another quarterback controversy on the hands of the Jets due to this acquisition, it’s been the exact opposite. Vick’s been saying and doing all the right things from the start of his tenure with the team and will develop many around him in addition to Smith. With the Jets offseason conditioning program underway, he’s been a welcomed addition to the locker room as well and that’s what matters most. If a team is filled with players who believe in winning, are humble and will hold each other accountable to perform to the highest of their abilities, it’s all the formula that will bring much success to the Jets.
Vick will have a huge positive impact on the team since he’s much more humble now after proclaiming Smith is the Jets’ starting quarterback, shutting down any and all controversies to avoid distractions. It’s basically Vick’s turn now in the final chapter of his career to improve Smith for the future and push him towards excellence. Perhaps then, he’ll be remembered in a much better light than with all of the controversies that surrounded him in his troubled past. Since he paid his dues in society, this is a great way to prove once and for all that while he made some serious mistakes, he has gone above and beyond to redeem himself.
Passing the torch to a young player looking to make his own legacy in the NFL is a very nice way towards football redemption.
