Despite coming off of back-to-back 6-10 seasons, expectations are high for the Buffalo Bills this season. A strong draft class plus several key acquisitions have put even more pressure on the team to end their long playoff drought. Here are some key issues the Bills have to address before the season starts.

With the departure of Stevie Johnson, first-round pick Sammy Watkins will step into the No. 1 wide receiver role for Buffalo. The Bills must now determine who will fill in the depth chart behind Watkins. Robert Woods and Marquise Goodwin both showed promise in their rookie seasons last year, and Mike Williams, brought in from Tampa Bay, may be more talented than either. T.J. Graham and Chris Hogan and will also figure into the discussion.

Pro Bowler Jairus Byrd left for New Orleans this offseason, leaving a significant hole at free safety. Aaron Williams made a nice transition to strong safety after struggling at cornerback; he will likely nail down that spot to start the season. Corey Graham was signed as a free agent, but is better suited as a cornerback. Duke Williams and Jonathan Meeks didn’t see much time as rookies, but will be given a shot to start this year.

When looking at the Bills' struggles last season, one only needs to look at the lack of consistency at quarterback. E.J. Manuel missed almost half the season to injury, forcing the Bills to rely on Thad Lewis and Jeff Tuel in several big games. While the Bills are banking on a full season from Manuel, it never hurts to have veteran depth at quarterback. Bringing in a veteran free agent to challenge Lewis and Tuel would be a wise move.

Marcell Dareus is one of the Bills’ most talented players, and is coming off arguably his best season as a pro. However, he was recently arrested on charges of felony drug possession. The team is awaiting word on the inevitable suspension that will be placed on Dareus. He also had issues last year as he was benched at the end of the season for breaking team rules. The Bills must ask themselves if Dareus is worth the headaches he is causing.

The Bills boast one of the NFL’s best running back duos in Fred Jackson and C.J. Spiller. However, both players are entering the last year of their contracts. Jackson has been their most reliable player and is a true leader, but is also 33 years old; Spiller is in his prime and explosive when healthy, but has struggled to be consistently great. The Bills need to make sure that at least one of them is re-signed.
