San Francisco 49ers QB Colin Kaepernick is in competition to be selected as one of the NFL players to possibly grace the cover of EA Sports’ Madden 15. As a No. 2 seed in the bracket, Kaepernick is a favorite to win the competition due to his rising stock in popularity.

John Madden Football has been one of the most popular video games over the past 25 years. Video game and football fans stand in lines across the country awaiting the release of the game every summer.

Becoming the face of Madden is a great way to build your brand, but there is a lot of negativity that comes along with that particular accolade. The Madden Curse is probably is just as popular as the game itself. For many years, NFL superstars have suffered injuries or had abysmal seasons after  gracing the cover of the video game.

Fans have until May 22 to cast their votes for Kaepernick, and it would be best for himself and the 49ers if he isn’t selected. I know the voting is out of Kaepernick’s control, but 49ers fans need to have their fingers crossed that he is not selected.

Being on the cover of the video game is fine and dandy until the curse strikes. Memo to Kaepernick: I am sure Donovan McNabb,  Michael Vick, Ray Lewis, Vince Young, Larry Fitzgerald, Troy Polamalu and Peyton Hillis  all wish that they could have gone another route.

The 49ers and Kaepernick have enough pressure on them already, so it may be wise to stay away from gracing the cover of Madden 15. EA Sports says “it’s in the game”, but it can take you out of the game as well.
