After yet another disappointing season in 2013, the Dallas Cowboys are hoping to finally get over the hump and elevate themselves to contender status. Before they do that, though, they need to put together a good training camp and figure out their direction for 2014.

The Cowboys have numerous rumors currently swirling around their plans for 2014, and here are a few of the biggest ones.

After another disappointing season in San Francisco, James is reportedly on the trading block as the 49ers attempt to get some value back for the former second-round pick. While the Cowboys have Lance Dunbar, Joseph Randle and Ryan Williams as their backup running backs, none of them offer the electricity that James brings to the table. Could that factor be enough to make a trade happen?

Recently released by the Arizona Cardinals, Williams is getting a second chance with the Cowboys after three disappointing seasons in the NFL. Injuries and inconsistency have been major issues throughout his short career, but the potential is still there for him to live up to his second-round billing. If he can catch on early and embrace this fresh state, could Williams push the injury-prone Murray for snaps?

As of right now, the Cowboys’ backup quarterback still hasn’t shown for offseason workouts. With OTAs set to kick off soon, the team is crossing its fingers that Orton will finally make an appearance. However, seeing how it’s played out so far, Dallas is starting to think he could be headed for retirement. Would he really want to pay back his $3 million signing bonus instead of sleepwalking his way through training camp?

Even with George Selvie and Anthony Spencer currently slotted as their starting defensive ends, the Cowboys could be considering starting second-round pick Lawrence. Dallas moved up to select the Boise State product, and are clearly sold on him as a capable contributor along their defensive line. While it might be a questionable move to throw Lawrence to the wolves, the Cowboys need a playmaker and they think he can be it.

Coming off two back surgeries, there’s a lot of concern about Romo and his health moving forward. The Cowboys are confident he’ll participate in the team’s mandatory minicamp next month, but aren’t certain just how his back will hold up. Especially with Orton still an unknown and Brandon Weeden being the only other experienced quarterback on the roster, Romo’s questionable health is causing a lot of headaches at Valley Ranch.
