San Francisco 49ers outside linebacker Aldon Smith has pleaded no contest to three felony firearm charges against him, as well as two misdemeanor DUI charges. He will now await sentencing on July 25th, which could land him in the slammer for up to four years.
But we all know that won’t happen, because Smith is enough of a celebrity to get a slap on the wrist. If it were a normal everyday person, you know the proverbial book would be thrown directly at them. But that’s not how it works with high profile athletes.
So while Smith should serve a good chunk of time for his multiple mistakes, it’s just not likely to happen. That’s where the NFL could step in and really bring the hammer down, but that’s also unlikely to occur.
The league will wait for the legal rulings against the OLB before it makes a decision on his eligibility for 2014. That’s fair. But if the NFL is really serious about holding players to a high standard, it will make an example of Smith.
I’m all about second chances. But Smith has already received a couple of those and made no progress. Don’t forget, he could still be charged for making a fake bomb threat at LAX in April too. Given that he’s had multiple DUI incidents, possessed multiple illegal firearms and that he’s just flat out been a bad example for America’s youth — someone needs to send this clown a message.
Aldon Smith should get a chance to completely redeem himself someday. Call it a third chance or whatever you want, but he should get one last shot. For now, he needs to pay for what he’s done. He needs to take some time and think long and hard about the life he has and how lucky he truly is.
