With the draft complete and free agency all but wrapped up, the Denver Broncos head into the Organized Team Activities (OTAs). The Broncos will spend the summer determining the final roster going into their September 7th opener against the Indianapolis Colts. There will be many stories that will stand out as the summer progresses.
With that in mind, let's look at some of the rumors surrounding the Broncos camp heading into the OTAs.
Nate Irving has been one of the few weak spots for the Broncos defense. He has underperformed in his role, so there was no question that the position needed to be addressed. Lamin Barrow can bring a new element to the defense so this will be one of the few position competitions to look out for.
I have stated earlier that Ronnie Hillman could be on the roster bubble heading into OTAs. With his dismal 2013 campaign and the impending running backs on the roster, Hillman is basically on thin ice before the season even begins. If he struggles during the summer going forward, do not count on him having a roster spot in September.
Ronnie Hillman is not the only player who could be looking for a new team in September. There are a few other players, especially veteran players, who could be suiting up elsewhere if they do not perform well this summer. The Broncos are looking for youth and energy to help propel them to the Super Bowl and it is only a matter of time if the vets have the energy to at least keep their jobs.
The Broncos made an interesting move after the NFL Draft and signed UDFA Bryn Renner. Broncos camp has said that Brock Osweiler is the future at QB. However, they are looking at Zac Dysert as the third string and worry about his inconsistency at the quarterback position. Renner looks to compete for the third string position and if he impresses, look for Dysert to be on his way out.
Even though Montee Ball has been labeled the starting running back heading into the summer, the Broncos would be smart to sign a veteran player to help him develop into the role. No running back on the roster has started an NFL game. That is a bit concerning to me so the best bet would be to look into bringing one in. This way in case a running back in camp struggles, they can rely on the veteran to help out.
