Kurt Warner, James Harrison, Adam Vinateri, Wes Welker, and Carey Spear: what do these players have in common? They were all undrafted free agents.
Each year, after “Mr. Irrelevant” is taken to conclude the NFL Draft, every team has the opportunity to sign undrafted free agents. The Philadelphia Eagles signed a total of 15 undrafted free agents, but there is one player in particular that is extremely interesting. Carey Spear was brought onboard to compete with Alex Henery for placekicking duties. This should be music to Eagles fans’ ears, as almost every fan was ready to personally hand Henery his walking papers after last season.
Carey Spear attended Vanderbilt University where he played with fellow Eagles rookie Jordan Matthews. Spear, nicknamed “Murderleg,” had one of the nation’s strongest legs last season, as he went 4 for 5 from 50 yards or more. However, possibly the biggest upgrade Spear can provide is his ability to force opponents to take touchbacks. His 60.6 yards per kickoff along with his 22 touchbacks would be a significant upgrade for the Eagles, as well as a welcomed sight for Eagles fans.
