The Houston Texans finished with the league's worst record at 2-14 in 2013. The Texans are in the beginning of a major rebuild, as new head coach Bill O'Brien will hope to lead the Texans back to prominence just two seasons after they won the AFC South. With No. 1 overall pick Jadeveon Clowney and a new quarterback at the helm, the Texans enter 2014 with a different look. Here are the five biggest rumors surrounding the Texans entering OTAs.
The Texans' biggest issues entering the offseason were at defensive end and quarterback. The Texans addressed the defensive end position with the selection of Clowney with the No. 1 overall pick. One would think the Texans would have chosen the beginning of the second round to address their other big position issue. Instead, they chose to wait until the fourth round to address the void with the selection of Tom Savage.
Speaking of the quarterback position, the Texans will have an open QB competition for the starting gig featuring the likes of Ryan Fitzpatrick, fourth-round pick Savage, Case Keenum and T.J. Yates. At the current moment, Fitzpatrick is the favorite to win the job. Fitzpatrick has been a journeyman starting quarterback through much of his nine-year NFL career. The veteran has started 77 games during his NFL career, posting a record of 27-49-1.
Most people seem to forget that the Texans are just two years removed from an AFC South title. They also won the division in 2011. Entering 2013, the team was a favorite to represent the AFC in the Super Bowl. After a Week 1 comeback victory over the San Diego Chargers, everything went downhill. The fact of the matter is, the Texans have a legit shot at being a playoff team if they can find a stable quarterback.
Jadeveon Clowney is such a highly-touted prospect that it's hard to imagine a scenario where Clowney doesn't turn out to be a dominant pass rusher. Clowney will have every opportunity to become an elite pass rusher, as he will start out his NFL career as a hybrid pass rusher at outside linebacker. The question is, will he have the biggest impact of any NFL rookie as the No. 1 overall pick? Here's to saying yes.
Not soon after the Texans had a feel good moment by drafting Clowney with the No. 1 overall pick, they received some bad news -- franchise receiver Andre Johnson wants out of Houston. Johnson has been a part of the organization since 2003 and is the face of the franchise. If Johnson leaves, the Texans don't have many receiving weapons after DeAndre Hopkins. Rumor has it that the Texans are trying to trade for New England Patriots QB Ryan Mallett.
