The San Francisco 49ers fell a Richard Sherman deflection short of playing in their second straight Super Bowl. Despite that heartbreaking NFC Championship Game loss, the team enters 2014 with arguably the deepest roster in the entire NFL. If the Niners hope to get over the hump, here are five moves they must make.

Although Frank Gore is still the team's starting running back at the age of 31, it's clear the Niners are planning on life without him as soon as this season. The Niners spent a second-round draft pick on Ohio State running back Carlos Hyde. The team also still has Kendall Hunter and LaMichael James on the roster. Figuring out the RB situation is vital to the team's success.

The Niners had a bad wide receiver situation in 2013 due to Michael Crabtree playing through injury. Anquan Boldin was the only legit target a year ago. Now the Niners have both Crabtree and Boldin returning, along with the addition of Stevie Johnson. Johnson had over 70 percent of his targets playing out of the slot in 2013. Expect him to the play the slot for the Niners this season.

3. Figuring Out NaVorro Bowman's Replacement

NaVorro Bowman suffered a gruesome ACL injury in the NFC Championship Game, and he's not expected back until midway through the 2014 season. In the meantime, the Niners have to find a LB to replace Bowman. Their top options at the moment are Michael Wilhoite and undrafted free agent Shayne Skov. Wilhoite is the favorite, having started two games last season.

One of the Niners' biggest priorities entering training camp is the topic of contract extensions. Two figures that have been key to the Niners' success over the past few years -- Crabtree and head coach Jim Harbaugh -- need to be extended before the 2014 regular season begins. Crabtree is the Niners' only game-breaker at WR, while Harbaugh is the coach who revived the 49ers.

As mentioned in the previous slide, the Niners' main topic of concern entering training camp is locking up key players and figures to extensions. There is no bigger priority than signing QB Colin Kaepernick to a contract extension. He may not deserve $ 20 million annually, but he has led the Niners deep into the postseason both years he has been the starting QB.
