The Minnesota Vikings have had an eventful few months since their season ended last year and have undergone many changes including new players, two first-round picks and a new head coach. These are five storylines to look out for during OTAs.
Peterson underwent successful groin surgery on Jan. 23 after missing two of the Vikings' last three games of the season and took part in the team's pre-draft minicamp earlier this month. Peterson said he's "not far off" from being fully recovered. The Vikings will surely take things slowly with their franchise player, but it will be interesting to see where he's at in his recovery in OTAs.
The Vikings were so impressed with Teddy Bridgewater during their rookie minicamp that he will receive first-team reps during OTAs. Bridgewater is currently third on the depth chart behind Matt Cassel and Christian Ponder. The latter will also have an opportunity with the first team. Cassel is the guy at the moment, but if Bridgewater continues to steadily improve, look for it to be an open competition heading into training camp.
The Vikings not only brought in new head coach Mike Zimmer, but also new offensive coordinator Norv Turner -- and players are still adjusting to the new scheme. Wide receiver Greg Jennings says his "head is spinning" and Cordarrelle Patterson has to learn his second scheme in as many years, but is excited as well. There is a bit of a learning-curve, but luckily they still have a few months to sort it all out.
The Vikings spent their first-round pick on Anthony Barr who will play strongside linebacker, but still have a major hole at middle linebacker after cutting Erin Henderson this offseason. They brought back Jasper Brinkley and also have young linebackers in Audie Cole, Gerald Hodges and Michael Mauti. Captain Munnerlyn is the key addition at corner, but it will surely be an open competition behind him and Xavier Rhodes.
The Vikings had three first-round picks in last year's draft in Cordarrelle Patterson, Xavier Rhodes and Sharrif Floyd and are looking for them to do bigger and better things this season. Patterson, or the self-proclaimed "flashy," will look to shine even brighter after a wildly successful 2013. Rhodes showed signs of brilliance, but also struggled at times. Nevertheless, the Vikings are excited about his potential as well as Floyd's.
