With the possible news of Sean Lee being lost for the year, the conversation has turned to who’s next for the Dallas Cowboys.
Lee has proven over the years that he just can’t stay healthy, and all signs point to 2014 being yet another case of that. He’s said to have a torn ACL, and even with rapid recovery times these days courtesy of modern sports medicine, there’s just no way he’d make it back in time for any action this season.
So who’s up next in Big D?
Although the Cowboys did draft a linebacker with lots of potential in Anthony Hitchens, he plays on the weak side and wouldn’t be an option to fill in the void left in the middle by Lee’s injury. Furthermore, he’s a rookie who needs time to develop.
The safe bet is that the Cowboys will be on the phone to free agents the minute Lee’s injury is confirmed. But who could they call?
Jonathan Vilma and Pat Angerer are two names currently being kicked around the internet. Both have played at a high level from the MLB position, and more specifically, at high level in a 4-3 scheme. Both are available free agents, who could theoretically come on board and be at Cowboys practice tomorrow.
But at the same time, both guys also have trouble staying healthy, just like Lee does.
If you had to pick one, Angerer would make the most sense because of his age. He’s only 27 and just two seasons removed from being one of the top tacklers in all of football (146 in 2011). At full health he would make for an excellent replacement. But there are certainly no guarantees when it comes to his health.
One way or another, the safe bet is that guys like Vilma and Angerer will be receiving phone calls from Dallas in the near future.
