It’s been another offseason filled with optimism for what is expected to be the NFL’s youngest roster for the third year in a row in the St. Louis Rams. All of that youth figures to translate into some serious results in the third year of Jeff Fisher’s regime with the franchise, and OTAs are just the beginning of those rewards being realized. Here are five big storylines to following during the team’s first organized workouts of the 2014 season.

Several new faces figure to be manning starting spots this season in the Rams’ secondary, and I think I speak for all fans in saying “thank goodness.” Cortland Finnegan is gone which means Janoris Jenkins and Trumaine Johnson are the starters on the boundaries. Lamarcus Joyner was chosen in Round 2 and is likely to find a starting gig at free safety. Even undrafted rookie Marcus Roberson could make an impression at the nickel corner spot.

Two of the cornerstones for the Rams were lost last season due to torn ACLs. Both left tackle Jake Long and quarterback Sam Bradford faced grueling rehab to get back in action, and Bradford – whose injury happened some eight weeks earlier – is said to be running and throwing currently. Long will likely be eased along, but it will be interesting to see what, if anything, the team has to say about his likely availability for training camp.

Everyone was looking for it in his first year, but Tavon Austin never really took over a game aside from a few flashes here and there. This season the expectations will be ramped up given having a full year under his belt and time to acclimate to the speed of the game. There’s a reason the Rams traded up into the top-10 for him, and Austin is poised to show the league why in 2014.

2. Zac Stacy Encore

Arguably the most pleasant surprise of last season was Zac Stacy in the St. Louis backfield after nearly a decade of Steven Jackson being the lone face toting the rock. A ridiculous rookie campaign where he didn’t take over until Week 6 will bring hefty expectations into year two, and Stacy will likely be counted on even more this year with Bradford’s injury comeback and given how well the ground game worked in 2013.

It might be a bit presumptuous, but the Rams have one of the craziest front fours in the league on paper in 2014. Adding Aaron Donald to the list of Robert Quinn, Chris Long and Michael Brockers is just absurd, and this modern-day Fearsome Foursome is truly taking shape in St. Louis. Look for NFC West QBs to be on the run a lot this season, and OTAs will be the first chance to see this quartet fully assembled.
