5 Positional Battles to Watch During Chicago Bears' OTAs

With OTAs heating up, there are plenty of open competitions for starting roles on this Chicago Bears team. Here is the list of the five most compelling position battles to watch over the coming weeks.

While the backup QB on most teams is an almost forgotten about position, it has meant quite a bit to the Bears over the past few seasons. With Jay Cutler showing signs of becoming injury-prone, his backup needs to be ready at all times. Journeyman Jordan Palmer has been named No. 2 thus far, though sixth-round draft choice David Fales is definitely going to give him a run for his money.

After a disastrous showing from the safety position last season, Bears fans were hoping for an offseason splash to help fix the position. Though no splash was made, there were still some improvements by bringing in Ryan Mundy and M.D. Jennings via free agency. With incumbent starter Chris Conte recovering from shoulder surgery, this battle should heat up more in training camp.

Lance Briggs is the only clear cut starter for this unit heading into 2014. There will be plenty of discussion as to who will fill the third spot at strong side. Shea McClellin has made the move from DE and will battle it out with second-year man Jon Bostic. The edge will go to Bostic because of more time spent at the position, though I wouldn't count McClellin out just yet.

2. Defensive Tackle Rotation

After suffering quite a few injuries here last season, the Bears added depth via the draft to help bolster their rotation. The only question that remains is whether or not either rookie, Ego Ferguson and Will Sutton, can crack the starting lineup. With Jeremiah Ratliff heading into his 10th season and Stephen Paea coming off a few injuries, the door is wide open for someone to step up.

As Roberto Garza enters his 14th season in the NFL, the Chicago Bears began looking for a replacement in the event that Garza is injured. The team added Brian de la Puente via free agency, and he will look to step in if he is needed. Though Garza should definitely get the nod to start the season, 14 years of playing along the offensive line will begin to take its toll; look for de la Puente to make a big push this offseason.
