5 Positional Battles To Watch During The Miami Dolphins' OTAs

After putting together a solid offseason thus far, the Miami Dolphins are entering OTAs with numerous positional battles yet to be decided. Here are five battles that will have my attention moving forward.

WR Brandon Gibson put together a very productive season as Miami's slot man until his knee was destroyed part way through the season. Rishard Matthews then stepped into Gibson's role and played lights out. But that did not stop Miami from adding another young slot receiver in LSU's Jarvis Landry to the mix. All three players will vie for the starting slot position. Right now, my money is on Gibson, but do NOT sleep on Landry.

Jamar Taylor had to deal with numerous nagging injuries throughout his rookie season just one year ago. Now fully healthy and ready-to-go, Taylor will battle the savvy veteran Cortland Finnegan for the starting corner position opposite Pro Bowl CB Brent Grimes. Taylor should end up running away with the competition as this battle continues, but right now Finnegan has the upper hand due to experience.

3. Will RB Lamar Miller or Knowshon Moreno Start?

Some call Miller's second season in the league a "disappointment", but given the lack of talent along the offensive line (58 sacks) I'll give Miller another season to prove his worth. Miami brought in "Mr. Everything" in Knowshon Moreno, fresh off a career year in just about every category. Right now Moreno looks to have the edge, but Miller seems like a better fit for what new offensive coordinator Bill Lazor wants to do.

With DT Paul Soliai now reunited with DC Mike Nolan in Atlanta, Miami must figure out their defensive tackle rotation. With DTs Randy Starks, Earl Mitchell, Jared Odrick and a very talented youngster in LSU's Anthony Johnson, the possibilities are endless. My money is on a starting duo of Starks and Mitchell with Odrick coming in to spell either player from time to time. But with Odrick nursing an injury, it's too tough to say right now.

Last season OLB Philip Wheeler really struggled in the majority of games. Wheeler was bad in every facet of his game besides rushing the passer. Former Florida Gator and second-year OLB Jelani Jenkins will look to challenge Wheeler for his starting "Will" linebacker spot in Miami's 4-3 defensive scheme. Jenkins filled in well last season in relief of Wheeler, so I would not be shocked if Jenkins could indeed become the everyday starter.
