The first workouts have begun as "voluntary" OTAs have gotten underway. There have been a few surprises out of the New York Giants, some good news and some bad. Here is a look at five storylines surrounding the Giants a few months away from the beginning of the 2014 season.

The Giants have cut Josh Freeman. Freeman was on the team for just six weeks, leaving Eli Manning, Curtis Painter and Ryan Nassib as New York's quarterbacks on the current roster. Manning is obviously the starter and a competition between Painter and Nassib will surely take place for the backup role.

Defensive end Jason Pierre-Paul is practicing and says he is 100% right now. A shoulder injury kept him out of the final five games last year and last offseason he was recovering from back surgery. A healthy and productive JPP is crucial for the Giants pass rush and defense as a whole. Even more burden will be placed on the defensive end this season in the wake of Justin Tuck's departure.

David Wilson has been getting some light work in at OTAs. However, he has not yet been cleared for contact after undergoing major neck surgery this offseason. Last year, Wilson hurt his neck in Week 5 and missed the rest of the season. He has an MRI coming up on June 4 and could be cleared for full participation.

On Friday, the Giants announced that Will Hill is suspended for the first six games of the season. Hill has been suspended three times in three years and this is his second violation due to marijuana use. New York may cut ties with the troubled safety or they could keep him and hope that maybe he has finally learned his lesson. The fourth time is a charm?

Eli Manning surprised just about everybody by being ready for practice this soon. Manning had surgery to repair his injured ankle just seven weeks ago and is already getting reps in at OTAs. The extra time will surely be beneficial since Manning is learning a new offense under new offensive coordinator Ben McAdoo.
