With OTA's underway here are five things Colts fans should know. Players are now being put into certain positions and a lot of mental work is being done.

5. Khaled Holmes is the Starting Center

It is clear that the Colts are going to live and die with Holmes at center. After the surprise retirement of Phil Costa, the Colts interior offensive line is going to depend on Holmes to be much better than Samson Satele if the running game is going to take off in the upcoming year.

4. Delano Howell is Going to be the Starting Free Safety

Unlike Holmes, Howell is replacing a quality starter and fan favorite in Antoine Bethea. Bethea lost a step in coverage but was a solid run stopper in the box. The coaching staff clearly feels that Howell can regain the missteps that Bethea lost in coverage while still having the same support in the run game with LaRon Landry.

3. Jack Mewhort is Going to be Playing Guard

During OTA’s, Mewhort was working with the guards and more specifically the left guard. I expect Mewhort to flip to right guard in training camp with Donald Thomas returning from injury, but for now he is working on the left side. The former tackle in college should a good run blocker at the NFL level and should be a boost to the Colts running game.

2. Bjoern Werner is Going to Try to Replace Mathis

With Robert Mathis now suspended for the first four games of the season, the question going into camp was where was the pass rush going to come from? The initial answer after OTA’s is Bjoern Werner. Werner is going to be expected to fill the shoes of Mathis until his suspension is over. It will be interesting to see the kind of scheme changes the Colts might use to create sacks with Werner.

1. Trent Richardson Focusing More on the Mental Game

Trent Richardson was spotted wearing the red non-contact jersey during OTA’s. This leads me to believe that he is focused on understanding the playbook at this point. This should help him long term because the less thinking he does the faster he can play when it comes to the regular season.
