After a strong draft and a dip into the free-agent market, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers are looking to turn their team around in 2014. A long summer is ahead, so let's take a look at five things the Bucs must accomplish during OTAs in order to find success this year.
Doug Martin has emerged as one of the league's premiere running backs, but the "muscle hamster" can't carry the ball every time. The battle between Mike James and rookie RB Charles Sims is heating up. Lovie Smith said he was especially pleased with the young rookie out of West Virginia (Sims). Finding relief for Doug Martin should be something to focus on during OTAs.
Timothy Wright said that he was happy to have competition at the tight-end position after the Bucs drafted Washington's Austin Seferian-Jenkins in this year's draft. Both players are great athletes and have the ability to hold it down as a starter, so coaches should be keeping an eye on this position battle throughout OTAs and training camp.
Alterraun Verner and Johnthan Banks have the first two cornerback spots on lock, but who will hold down the nickelback? Leornard Johnson was the front runner, but now D.J. Moore (signed in the offseason out of Carolina) is shining at OTAs. As of now, Lovie Smith is going with Moore, but it's going to be a long summer. The competition is heating up.
The sky is the limit for rookie WR Mike Evans. With his size, he is a threat downfield and in the red zone. He and Vincent Jackson look to do big things together in Tampa Bay, so it would be nice if the Bucs can get their first-round pick rolling. If Evans can quickly catch on, that offense could be dangerous to the other competition in the NFC South.
Despite rumors, Tampa Bay did not trade Mike Glennon in the NFL draft. Following the big weekend, the Buccaneers said that Glennon is their quarterback of the future. Newly acquired Josh McCown may have something to say about that after a strong performance with the Bears last season. Both have the ability to be solid starters, so the Bucs may want to figure that out soon.
