In every NFL season, there are Cinderella stories and there are disappointments. There are breakouts and there are busts. Who’s going to step up this year for the San Diego Chargers? Here’s five players to keep an eye on.

The Chargers will go as far as Philip Rivers takes them. After struggling in 2011 and 2012, Rivers responded by throwing 32 touchdowns and tying a career-high 105.5 QBR last season. Frank Reich is the new offensive coordinator, but don’t expect the game plan to change much. The only question here is, which version of Rivers will we see in 2014?

4. Manti Te'o

It was not smooth sailing for Manti Te’o during his rookie season. From being catfished to playing on a broken foot, things couldn’t have started off much worse. Rumor has it that Te’o is bulking up while recovering from offseason foot surgery. This could be a breakout season for the former Heisman runner-up.

The third year TE showed spurts of greatness last year. After scoring a touchdown during the playoff game against the Cincinnati Bengals, you can tell this kid is ready for a bigger role. Antonio Gates may be one of the greatest tight ends of all time, but even future Hall of Famers meet Father Time eventually.

The rookie SS split time with Marcus Gilchrist at the end of last season. Now, Addae has a chance to steal the starting job. Reports say that Addae showed up to OTAs in extraordinary shape and is ready to compete for the starting gig. The Chargers' secondary was the worst in the AFC last year and could use all the help they can get

All eyes will be on Verrett, the San Diego Chargers' rookie CB selected 25th overall in the 2014 NFL Draft. It'll be fun to see how the undersized defensive back competes against professional talent. Expectations are high, as they should be with any first-round pick, but it's important to keep those expectations realistic. San Diego won't have their own ‘Revis Island’ come Week 1.
