The Carolina Panthers came out of nowhere last season to steal the NFC South crown away from the New Orleans Saints behind a strong defense and great play by QB Cam Newton. But this is a new season with new players and a whole new looking offense.
Here are five Carolina Panthers players I am most intrigued by heading into this season.

Last season I pinned CB Josh Norman as one of my top breakout candidates, and he certainly had his moments in 2013. The defense is now without CB Captain Munnerlyn, therefore Norman will be in a battle with CB Josh Thomas for Munnerlyn's starting position. Norman has nice size for the position, and if he can become more consistent as a corner, he could be one of the team's best defensive players.

The Panthers selected WR Kelvin Benjamin in the first round of the 2014 NFL Draft after allowing WRs Steve Smith, Brandon LaFell and Ted Ginn Jr. to leave this offseason. Benjamin, a redshirt sophomore, will have to come into his own very quickly as the team's No. 1 target at the receiver position. His size is quite intriguing alone, but he will have to grow up very quickly as a player to become a dominant force for Newton.

3. CB Melvin White

As mentioned previously, the Panthers are without CB Captain Munnerlyn leaving the team without a veteran presence at the corner position. But CB Melvin White played quite well last season, truly coming out of nowhere. White now has the opportunity to become the team's top dog at corner and become the true face of the secondary. The next player may have something to say about that, but White surely has a great chance to do so.

2. S Robert Lester

S Robert Lester, an undrafted free agent from Alabama, worked his way into the starting lineup last season after being an unknown commodity outside of Carolina. Lester went on to have a rookie-like season with some ups and some downs, but the former Alabama stud has the chance to take a huge leap this season as the team's future and face of one of the league's best overall defenses. He will not disappoint Panther fans in 2014.

1. RB Kenjon Barner

Speed is the biggest element that Barner brings to the Panthers wherever the team decides to use him. As a returner, a receiver or as a running back, Barner has the ability to score anytime he touches the football. Barner is someone I have my eye on this season. The Panthers have thunder in both RBs DeAngelo Williams and Jonathan Stewart, but Barner adds an electric element to that stable that no other back can add. He's special.
