This season appears to be a Super Bowl or bust type of season for the San Francisco 49ers. The pressure will be on the 49ers, and will be up for them to produce. Here are 5 things the San Francisco 49ers must accomplish during OTAs to remain at the top of the food chain in the NFL.
Alex Boone is disgruntled due to his contract. Boone is currently missing from the team's OTAs, and will not be in attendance until his contract issues are taking care of. Boone is one of the top offensive guards in the NFL, and his impact will be missed in a huge way if he continues to be upset about his contract.
Tramaine Brock now the top CB on the 49ers. Brock had a breakout last season, and he will look to continue that trend this season. There will be a lot of pressure on the back end this season, and with Chris Culliver battling off-the field issues it will be important to find a consistent counterpart that will accompany Brock.
Vernon Davis is currently missing from OTAs because he wants a new contract. Davis is one of the highest paid players at his position, but he feels like he needs more money. Davis is arguably the most irreplaceable player on the offense outside of Colin Kaepernick, and his absence will be huge if he continues to say out. GM Trent Baalke has a tough task ahead of him, and something needs to be done to resolve this fast.
Linebacker is one of the strongest positions on the 49ers, but there may be some concerns coming out of OTAs. As of now it is unknown when and how long Aldon Smith will be suspended, and it is unknown when Navorro Bowman will be returning from injury. DC Vic Fangio has a tall task ahead of him if he has to replace two All-Pro's for a short or extended period of time, so it may be wise to think ahead.
The San Francisco 49ers have been a run-heavy team under the Jim Harbaugh regime, but it may be time to open up the playbook. OTAs is a very important period when building chemistry with new faces. Colin Kaepernick has a lot of new and old toys to play with, and it will be up to OC Greg Roman to put everyone in position to succeed.
