San Francisco 49ers: 5 Veterans Who Won't Make the 53-Man Roster

Depth is something that the San Francisco 49ers have at most positions. Teams as deep as the 49ers often have a hard time deciding who should be cut at the end of training camp. Sometimes, it has nothing to do with ability, but rather what the team needs. All the players on this list are capable of playing, but they may not be needed by the 49ers.

Here are five veterans on the 49ers' roster who could have trouble making the team.

After being selected in the first round of the 2011 NFL Draft, Jonathan Baldwin is still searching for his niche in the NFL. After being traded from the Kansas City Chiefs, Baldwin really didn't get a chance to make any noise at the wide receiver position. This will be his first training camp in San Francisco, but I believe the addition of Stevie Johnson and Brandon Lloyd it will make Baldwin the odd man out.

This choice is a reach because Snyder is a viable backup for the 49ers, and there are potential contract issues with Mike Iupati and Alex Boone. Snyder is the consummate pro, but I believe the versatility that Jonathan Martin will bring to the offensive line could make Snyder a roster casualty.

3. QB Blaine Gabbert

With the acquisition of Josh Johnson, more pressure is on Gabbert to make the San Francisco 49ers' roster. Gabbert has failed to live up to his lofty draft status, and finds himself in his first season as a member of the 49ers. He doesn't have the ability to be the reliable backup the team needs him to be, and I believe Jim Harbaugh's familiarity with Josh Johnson will propel him to become the backup quarterback after training camp.

2. CB Eric Wright

Eric Wright is in a crowded defensive backfield that doesn't have enough room for everyone on the roster. With the addition of Chris Cook to a deep secondary, Wright has become dispensable.

LaMichael James can be a solid player in the NFL, but it may not be with the team that drafted him. James is in a tough place, because he is in the backfield with four other running backs. Rookie Carlos Hyde will look to take a few carries from Frank Gore, and Marcus Lattimore is finally healthy. James will have to make his mark on special teams, but if rookie Bruce Ellington shows any flashes as a return man, James could be on his way out.
