Atlanta Falcons: 5 Veterans Who Won't Make the 53-Man Roster

The Atlanta Falcons had a meltdown of epic proportions in 2013, going from Super Bowl-favorites to bottom feeders mainly due to a lack of production from some of the team’s veterans. Because of this lack of production, many veteran Falcons will find themselves looking for work before the season begins. That said, here are five veteran Atlanta Falcons who won’t make the final roster.
5. WR Devin Hester

5. WR Devin Hester

Although Devin Hester is arguably the best return man in the history of the NFL, his contributions as a receiver leave a lot to be desired. Hester might be a great return man, but his lack of talent as a receiver makes him expendable.
4. C Joe Hawley

4. C Joe Hawley

A below-average NFL center, Joe Hawley simply isn’t worth a roster spot ahead of Peter Konz and James Stone. Hawley plays tough, but with no other desirable traits in his game, he is just wasting a roster spot.
3. QB Dominique Davis

3. QB Dominique Davis

With last year’s seventh-round selection Sean Renfree and 2014 UDFA Jeff Mathews both on the Falcons’ roster, there is no need for Dominique Davis. Both Renfree and Mathews are better equipped to take over the offense in the case of an emergency, and Davis will find himself out of a job before long.
2. DT Peria Jerry

A first-round selection back in 2009, Peria Jerry hasn’t really worked out for the Falcons. Jerry has always had tremendous athletic potential, but he has yet to turn that potential into production. Jerry just isn’t worth the headache anymore.
1. ILB Akeem Dent

1. ILB Akeem Dent

Once upon a time, it was thought that Akeem Dent had the potential to become one of the best inside linebackers in the NFL. However, after an extremely disappointing 2013 season, it appears that the Falcons are ready to move on from Dent, and rightfully so.
