Every championship team boasts a strong core of young, talented players. These guys don’t necessarily have to be rookie sensations; as long as they grow into a role and contribute, the team has a good chance to succeed. With that in mind, let’s take a look at the five most promising Patriots entering their second or third NFL seasons.

Ryan looked like anything but a rookie last season. The Rutgers product broke out in the Patriots’ comeback victory over the Broncos when he made a great play on the ball and intercepted Peyton Manning. He simply improved with each game, and although the Patriots added Darrelle Revis and Brandon Browner, Ryan will still be an important cog in the secondary.

Dennard has struggled with legal issues throughout his first two seasons as a pro, but there is no question that he can be a force on the field. He has deceiving power, and will be a great option as the No. 2 corner in the first four games of the season while Brandon Browner is suspended. Even when Browner returns, Bill Belichick won’t let Dennard’s talents go to waste.

3. WR Aaron Dobson

At times during the 2013 season, it looked like Dobson could be a spokesperson for Butterfinger. But he also showed flashes of future stardom, like when he ripped off 130 yards receiving and caught a pair of touchdowns against the Pittsburgh Steelers. After a full offseason of work, Dobson should be ready to take the next step in his career this season.

2. DE Chandler Jones

Jones eclipsed the double-digit sack mark in his sophomore season, indicating that he should be a pass-rushing force for years to come. Expect Jones to continue his upward swing in 2014, as the Patriots’ improved secondary will force opposing quarterbacks to hold onto the ball half a second longer, giving Jones opportunities to wreak havoc.

Collins wasn’t much of a contributor for most of 2013, but when he came into form in the playoffs, he made an instant impact. He has the size and athleticism to thwart the league’s best tight ends, but he can also be used as a pass rusher opposite Chandler Jones. Collins is a toy for Bill Belichick — he has the physical tools and talent to succeed however he is used.
