With training camp around the corner the San Francisco 49ers are looking to establish the depth of the team. Despite the 49ers having a championship caliber team, there are several open holes on the roster that need to be filled. Here are 5 players climbing up the depth chart in OTAs that can have a huge impact this season.
Vance McDonald had a quiet rookie year with just eight receptions, but with Vernon Davis out of the lineup due to contract issues, McDonald is expected to step into that spot until Davis decides to come back. The longer Davis maintains his holdout the more opportunity McDonald receives to rise up the depth chart.
When Chris Cook signed with San Francisco 49ers it was unknown what his role would be on the team. As uncertainty continues to loom in the defensive backfield, Cook has been moving up the depth chart and has even taken snaps with the first-team defense.
Marcus Martin may be a rookie, but he has been the center of attention at the center position. As of now Dan Kilgore is taking over for Jonathan Goodwin, but in the process Marcus Martin is turning heads at the center position and could make his way up the depth chart.
The inside linebacker position is being occupied by Patrick Willis and Michael Wilhoite, but Wilhoite will have to fight off rookie Chris Borland to be the replacement for NaVorro Bowman.
Aldon Smith could be facing a suspension from the NFL, and the 49ers will need to find a replacement. With the uncertainty of Smith's situation placing a dark cloud over the team, Corey Lemonier is rising up the depth chart and looking like a great stopgap replacement if Smith is out. In OTAs, Lemonier has looked as if he has bulked up a bit, and that extra weight may be needed for the load he may have to carry replacing Smith.
