When you look at the 2014 NFL season, there are many things to consider. One thing that’s not often considered is who will be the WORST team in the league. By worst team, I simply mean the team with the worst record, and the one who will end up with the first pick in next year’s draft. In my eyes though, this really comes down to two teams who are going to be “fighting” (I guess you could call it that) for the worst record (or first pick) in the NFL.
If you’re a fan of sports betting, you’ll see that the over/under on these two teams wins are both set at 4.5. The over is the favorite for both sides, but honestly, when you’re looking at a team projected to win 4.5 games, obviously you’re likely going to be betting on the over.
Let’s start with the Raiders. While Matt Schaub is their current starting quarterback and they drafted Derek Carr as the future quarterback, their schedule is going to be tough on them this year. They are definitely in a rebuilding mode still, and there are many question marks. I think that we see them get off to a slow start, and then Carr comes in to take over and we just see him trying to learn on the fly. That obviously equals a bad situation. The Raiders are also in a division where all three teams could potentially be playoff teams, which is rough.
Now for the Jaguars. I’m glad that this team got the quarterback who they believe is their future in Blake Bortles, but it looks as though Chad Henne will be their guy this year. Henne isn’t bad, but losing Justin Blackmon definitely hurts them, as you can imagine. They drafted Marqise Lee, who’s intriguing, but they just have too much to figure out and not enough offensive weapons to compete this season. To top things off, their division has two teams in the Tennessee Titans and Houston Texans, who I believe will be much improved, whereas the Jaguars aren’t going to be nearly as improved. The Jags could be looking at the top pick in the 2014 NFL Draft.
My pick? I’m going with the Raiders to end up with the first pick in the draft, and the worst record in the league.
Who’s your pick to end with the worst record in 2014 in the NFL?
