The first practice of training camp for the Chicago Bears is just over a month away. Numerous questions surround the team, particularly on the defensive side of the ball where Chicago was utterly inept in 2013. Here are 5 questions that must be answered during training camp this summer.

Marquess Wilson is the early favorite for the spot, but veteran Josh Morgan will push him for it. Wilson has been working extensively with Alshon Jeffery and Brandon Marshall, and he is reportedly thinking less and reacting more on the field than he did last season. If Wilson wins the job, the Bears' four primary receivers would each be 6-foot-3 or above.

Jay Cutler looked brilliant at times in coach Marc Trestman's creative offensive scheme in 2013, but he had his share of head-scratching moments as well. Cutler has all the talent in the world; the question is whether or not he can put it together and play like a true franchise quarterback. With a good offensive line in front of him and plenty of receiving weapons, there are no excuses left heading into training camp.

3. Can Jared Allen Provide the QB Pressure the Bears Lacked Last Season?

The Bears couldn't pressure anyone or anything in 2013, tying for last in the NFL with just 31 sacks. Julius Peppers was a step slow all year long, and the Bears chose to cut ties with him and sign a less complete player but better current pass rusher in Jared Allen. It should become clear pretty quickly during training camp whether Allen will be able to make a productive difference.

Chris Conte had a dreadful 2013 season, and his infamous miscue against the Green Bay Packers in Week 17 will stick out like a sore thumb in the mind of Bears fans for quite a while. Somewhat surprisingly, he is still in town and will battle 2014 draftee Brock Vereen for the starting spot at free safety in training camp and the preseason.

Chicago's run defense was atrocious last season in large part due to a gutted defensive front. GM Phil Emery addressed this in the offseason, most notably with the signing of one of the league's best run-defending defensive ends in Lamarr Houston. With what projects to be a top three offense, the Bears simply need their defense to reach "slightly below average" territory in order to jump into the playoff hunt.
