Predicting 5 Surprise Starters For the Seattle Seahawks

It is now June, and the defending Super Bowl Champion Seattle Seahawks look basically the same as they did at this time last season. In all honesty, fans should applaud management for keeping the core of their team intact. However, there were a few lost starters this offseason leaving several jobs ripe for the picking. Oddly enough, a few of Seattle's future starters might be a bit surprising.

Honorable Mention: CB Jeremy Lane

Lane deserves an honorable mention here as a slot corner. While some folks might not consider the slot a starting position, the truth is that with the substantial increase in passing league-wide, most defenses actually start the game with at least three corners on the field in addition to their starting safeties. Lane will easily win the battle for Walter Thurmond III's former position with his short-area quickness and Seahawk-worthy toughness.

5. G James Carpenter

Carpenter went from the Seahawks' roster bubble to essentially a surefire starter at left guard in Seattle. The former first-round draft pick was rock-solid throughout the Seahawks' Super Bowl stretch, and rumor has it he put in the most productive offseason of his young career. With his weight down and his strength up, Carpenter's presence alongside Pro Bowl left tackle Russell Okung should make Seattle's left side one of the best in the NFL.

4. OT Michael Bowie

Like James Carpenter, Bowie has a real opportunity to impact Seattle's offensive line. But unlike Carpenter, Bowie will be competing at right tackle. More importantly, he is no surefire starter. Bowie has legitimate competition from 2014 second-round draft pick Justin Britt, whose draft status likely gives him the inside track to start. Evening the race, however, is Bowie's experience with eight Seahawks starts in 2014 under his belt.

3. LB Malcolm Smith

It may be hard to call Seattle's Super Bowl MVP a "surprise" starter in 2014. Yet, consider the fact Smith split time at OLB with Bruce Irvin most of the year, often playing primarily on passing downs and special teams. Truth be told, the majority of his starts prior to the playoffs came from Irvin's suspension and a K.J. Wright injury. Still, Smith's playoff and late-season heroics should earn him a starting job, allowing Irvin to go hunt QBs.

2. FB Spencer Ware

In 2013, FB Michael Robinson was seemingly ready to return to Seattle when he was mysteriously cut. The team instead opted to lean on rookie 7th-rounder Spencer Ware. Then, due to Ware's injuries, they turned to 2nd-year acquisition Derrick Coleman. Seattle clearly knew what they were doing. Robinson was deteriorating and while Coleman was a solid replacement, Ware has the grit, speed and explosiveness to add a new element to Seattle's backfield.

1. DT Jordan Hill

This is clearly the boldest prediction of the list. Hill was a 3rd-round draft pick last year for the Seahawks. He played in just 4 games before injury ended his debut season. In that time, however, Hill racked up 1.5 sacks. Coupled with flashes of brilliance on display throughout his rookie preseason, there is a strong possibility that Hill earns the coveted "starter" job in a talented DT rotation which includes Kevin Williams and Tony McDaniel.
