After addressing a number of issues during the offseason, the Minnesota Vikings have plenty of reasons to be optimistic about the upcoming NFL season. However, there are still a number of concerns that may cause trouble for the Vikings in 2014. Here are five of the biggest red flags facing the team heading into 2014.

5. QB Situation

While the QB situation in Minnesota looks to be much improved this season, it still may provide a fair share of issues. Matt Cassel is expected to be the starter to begin the season, but rookie Teddy Bridgewater will be breathing down his neck. If Cassel struggles early, fans will begin calling for Bridgewater, regardless of whether the coaching staff believes he is ready or not.

4. Health of Kyle Rudolph

In 2013, Rudolph missed the majority of the season with a fractured foot. While Rudolph contends that he is fully recovered from his injury, foot injuries have a tendency to reoccur. New offensive coordinator Norv Turner’s offensive scheme hinges on production from the tight end position, making Rudolph’s presence on the field critical to team success.

Despite improvements during the offseason, the Vikings still have a number of concerns on defense. DE Everson Griffen is assuming a starting role for the first time in his career, and FS Harrison Smith is coming off of an injury-plagued season. The Vikings will also need to see development from young players such as Xavier Rhodes and Shariff Floyd in order to improve what was a pitiful defensive season in 2013.

With the hiring of new head coach Mike Zimmer and new offensive coordinator Norv Turner comes new offensive and defensive schemes. It will take time for Vikings players to learn and adapt to these new systems, which likely will yield some growing pains.

A lot of Peterson-related rumors have been circulating as of late. There have been questions about whether he may be traded or even released due to salary cap concerns. Peterson is not only the Vikings’ best player but also the face of the franchise. If these rumors persist, they could become a distraction that the Vikings do not need.
