Every summer before the season begins, a handful of athletes make the case that they are worthy of starting. Training camps can be the ultimate boost to help athletes perform at unspoken levels to earn starting positions. Take a look at five possible surprise starters for the New York Jets in 2014.

Strong safety Antonio Allen has been working alongside free safety Calvin Pryor and both have been doing incredibly well working opposite each other. Head coach Rex Ryan loves what they bring to the table with their youth and speed. Allen would surprise many if he beats out Dawan Landry as a surprise starter. He would bring much more to the table and give the Jets' defensive secondary a much needed boost.

The wide receiver spot alongside Eric Decker is up for grabs. While many expect either Stephen Hill or Jeremy Kerley to lock up that second starting position, expect Jalen Saunders to give them great competition. He's very fast, has a good eye on the football and looks like he could be set for a breakout year. Expect him to surprise many by earning a starting spot on offense.

Kick returner Jacoby Ford will be competing with both Shaq Evans and Jeremy Kerley on handling all returning duties. Ford is considered by many to be one of the fastest athletes in the entire NFL as he holds several special teams records with the Oakland Raiders. He will surprise many during training camp with his speed as he'll be a surprise starter on both kickoff and punt returns.

2. CB Dexter McDougle

Cornerback Dexter McDougle is a natural hitting machine and despite dealing with injuries, has already showed promise as a solid defender. Dee Milliner will be the main piece in the Jets' defensive secondary and a battle for the second starting cornerback spot will be between McDougle and Dimitri Patterson. While Patterson has the experience, McDougle should have a strong shot at surprising many by getting ahead of him with his raw talent.

1. QB Michael Vick

While many predict and know quarterback Geno Smith has been unofficially named the starter, if he's inconsistent or performs poorly during training camps or the preseason, his time to hit the bench could come. Michael Vick is anxiously waiting his final opportunity to be a starter as he enters the final few years of his career. Vick would be the ultimate surprise since so far this offseason, it's been all about Smith being declared the starter.
